Quartz Lent 2022

Are you interested in a Quartz Lent group for 2022?

Ash Wednesday is the 2nd of March this year. There are a wide range of themes we could cover, and some of us are already meeting up on every second monday evening for the CLC group. However, the season of Lent does offer a chance to clear some headspace and time to do some extra reflection and study.

All my adult life I have been aware of people talking about terms like’Cross Cultural Evangelism”, Church Without Walls”, “Mission 21”, ‘Alternative Worship’ or more recently “Fresh Expressions “. I have been involved in traditional Church, adapting Church, building bridges in and bridges out as well as attempts to find ‘New Skins for New Wine’. Just as Jesus took 40 days and nights out after his baptism to go and prepare for the really public phase of his life on earth, perhaps Quartz could do the same?

CLC Meetings and Lent group
Mondays 7.30pm in St Johns building
Calendar might change. Please join the Lent 2022 e-mail list to keep up to date.
  • 28 Feb – Are you spirituality hungry – where do you find food? (With Pancakes)
  • 7 Mar – CLC reflection evening (Alison)
  • 14 Mar – What do you dare to dream, but doubt the wisdom of trying?
  • 21 Mar – CLC reflection evening
  • 28 Mar –What necessary compromises have you made, do they bind you?
  • 4 April CLC reflection evening
  • 11 April As a community how can we help each other ‘sparkle’, and be the invisible agents active in the wider community making life easier to live. (Table top activity)
  • 17th April – Easter Sunday BBQ – meet outside St Johns at 2pm to walk to the riverside opposite Lincluden Abbey – or 2.45 meet at the Nunholm car park. (Bring things to BBQ) we will have fire.

Big questions, but 10 days for each, and to plan a picnic by the water where we can eat some BBQ fish (as long as it is not snowing).

Please respond to say if you are interested, and we will work out the details. The picture in this message could be the start of a reading list! But as usual with Quartz activities this isn’t going to be another book club. Storytelling, Crafts, Artistic Exploration, Action – not just talking, and a respect for the need for personal contemplation will feature.

Hugging trees and reflecting on time. It was a cold and windy day today, which is normal for Scotland in December, but it was also damp. We met in peace and took a moment to become aware of our surroundings. Our reading was from the book of Luke. We discussed what could be considered “fruit”… Read more: QFC Dec2024

Some passages in the Bible should be uncomfortable reading. Not for those who are searching, or who feel lost – but for those who are confident that they know what is right and normal.
So this can be a trip into the wild for people who are comfortable, and time by the hearth eating homecooked food for the weary.

““Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thorns, or figs from thistles? In the same way, every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus you will know them by their fruits.”
Matt 7 vs. 15-20

I’ve been looking at stuff from the Centre for Action and Contemplation – that combination seems to offer a beautiful contradiction without being contradictory. I need to learn how to carry these two elements side by side and hope we can learn more of what this means.
